Friday, Feb. 15-Monday, Feb. 18, 2008

Extreme Ballet 2008 Winter Workshop offers a special limited enrollment of only 34 students allowing each and every student direct individual attention by the instructors. Designed after the intensive pre-professional Extreme Ballet Summer Program, the weekend workshop will be a coaching and mentoring experience focusing on improving the classical components of a dancer's training.

Classes will begin Friday, February 15 at approximately 4:30 p.m. and continue consecutively until Monday, February 18 at 1:30 p.m. (See Sample Schedule)

Accommodations will be provided on site in the Dancers' Inn, a sixteen-room motel style residence with double and triple rooms. Kaatsbaan will provide linens. (Bedding, blankets and towels) Recognizing the special dietary needs of dancers, nutritious and well-balanced meals will be provided.

The Dancers' Inn on site accommodations is located approx. 300 yds. from the Studio Theatre Building.

FACULTY - The ballet faculty will include Martine van Hamel andRobert Hill, both ABT Principals; Flamenco-Kati Garcia-Renart; Pilates-Sarite Sanders; and Maria Simpson-Anantomy; plus other guest faculty.

14 years and older
Intermediate-Pre-Professional
2 years of pointe class minimum

APPLICATION PROCESS

  4. 4a) Submit a VHS or DVD made after August 2006 and a headshot. The audition will be viewed with certain qualities in mind: line, placement, physique and quality of movement. (See Video Content)
    OR
    4b) Submit one photo in first arabesque en pointe, one photo à la seconde a terre en face, a headshot and one letter of recommendation from current teacher. Polaroid's are acceptable.

  5. Previous Extreme Ballet Students who have attended a previous summer session, please submit one photo in first arabesque en pointe and a headshot. Students who auditioned for a summer program who were accepted but did not attend should submit one photo in first arabesque en pointe and a headshot.
  6. The Winter Workshop also works as an audition for Extreme Ballet Summer Program if not able to attend a scheduled city on the audition tour.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

TECHNIQUE CLASS
Technique class will strengthen the dancer and cultivate a refinement of their quality of movement. The execution of classical steps will be perfected.

VARIATIONS & REPERTOIRE
Ms. Van Hamel will select solos and variations from the classical repertoire specifically suited for the weekend workshop.

COACHING
The variations taught will explore the stylistic uniqueness of master choreographers. Special attention will be given to each dancer with emphasis on developing a professional level of intensity and focus.

MASTER CLASS
Guest instructors from professional institutions will teach class from ABT, Boston Ballet or other renowned companies.

CHARACTER CLASS/Flamenco
Flamenco dance class will be oriented towards details of rhythm and movement specific of Spanish dance styles used in full length ballets.

PILATES
Pilates mat classes are uniquely suited to the training of dancers as a supplement to strengthen the muscles of the 'powerhouse'-the abdomen, lower back, and buttocks. The training stabilizes the core, or center of movement and improves flexability and strength for the total body.

EVENING LECTURES
Lectures in critical areas related to dance will be held in the evenings both practical and aesthetic. Subjects will assist the dancer's preparation for future study, awareness, and intelligent cultural growth.

VIDEO/DVD CONTENT
Start tape by stating your name and age and executing a short barre including:

  • Grande plié in each position
  • Tendu en croix with demi plié
  • Tendu and dégagés en croix
  • Rond de jambe en dehors and en dedans
  • Developpé and fondu en croix, end with an arabesque
  • Grand Battement en croix

Center Work:

  • Adage, show écarté and attitude
    Pirouette en dehors and en dedans
  • Petit allegro
  • Grand Allegro
  • Ladies - Pointe work combination
    Men - double tours and pirouettes à la seconde en l'air

Create your own combinations both at the barre and in the center. The audition should be no more than 15 minutes long-keep it simple.

CLASS ATTIRE
No baggy clothes are to be worn in class and female students may wear any color leotard with pink tights. Students must supply their own variation and character skirts, all ballet and character shoes.

INSURANCE
Students must have their own health insurance coverage for the weekend workshop. If the student's health insurance policy does not cover out of state coverage, an insurance rider must be taken out for the workshop.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Resident Assistants will chaperone the students who are on duty 24 hours. Lectures and activities such as dance movies will be scheduled in the evening for the dancers. Kaatsbaan is currently accepting applications for Resident Assistants for the Winter Workshop and the Summer Program. Please apply to Timothy Hess with a resume and three references.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation to and from Kaatsbaan is the responsibility of the student. A transportation fee of approximately $50 each way(minimun of 3 persons) will be additional if requiring transportation from the Albany Airport. Please contact Timothy Hess if requiring transportaion arrangement. Transportation from the Rhinecliff Amtrak station will be approximately $25 each way. There will be no adjustment in tuition or fees for late arrival or early departure.
