Dao Yin | Shinichi iova-koga
Priced on a sliding scale | Studio 3 - Studio Complex
Email info@inkboat.com with any questions
Dao Yin practices develop the elasticated quality of connective body tissues to develop a more resilient structure throughout the body. Pressure and expansion opens the joints and spaces between the layers of the physical body, improving the efficiency of energy production. When the pathways of the body open, pathogenic qi can exit the body and healthy qi can circulate more efficiently.
This workshop will focus on Dao Yin forms that wind and unwind the tissues (fascia and muscles), focused on the torso, in order to maintain energetic and physical mobility.
To begin this process, the correct alignment of bones and the effective sinking of body mass allows the soft, connective tissues to change through appropriate stress. All levels welcome.

This workshop integrates physical movement, attention, and perception to develop the palpable yet insubstantial quality known as presence. Shinichi’s teaching is rooted in the radical theater and movement innovations of Ruth Zaporah. When conversing with the unknown, who are we? As we enter an unpredictable exchange, what qualities emerge and how do they transform? How do we nourish the skills for clear, decisive, and playful responses to the moment?
The answers never come. The questions keep the improvisation moving. The content of the improvisation emerges through the endless questioning, endless detail. The quality of attention allows the mind and body to follow changes as they transform moment to moment, transporting us to myriad landscapes. Transformation and transportation become the music we compose with humor, darkness, wildness, or subtlety.

Protean Movement is a soulful contemporary dance class at the crossroads of traditional Black diasporan dance and contemporary dance intentionally activated as a mode of liberation. Darvejon welcomes all to explore his class and technique thoughtfully, anatomically, and playfully. The class begins with a thorough warm-up, then progresses through center and across-the-floor exercises, and phrase work. In each class, we will move beyond steps to investigate rhythm, weight, and spirit, all set against a musical mix that inspires creativity and freedom. The practitioner should bring an open mind, a willingness to activate the unseen, a towel, and a water bottle. All levels welcome.
Darvejon A. Jones (dar-vee-yawn) is a father + an “articulate” multimodal artist in search of liberation and peace. A deeply sentient water sign, Jones’s works are purposeful depictions of humanity's beauty and horror. His works have been presented at the Mckenna Theater, The Black Choreographers Festival at Dance Mission, and PUSHfest in San Francisco; Headwaters Theater, Studio 2, and BodyVox in Portland, Oregon, under the Darvejon Jones Dance Ensemble moniker; La MaMa Moves festival at La MaMa Experimental Theater, Triskelion Arts, The Kraine Theater, and The Kaye Playhouse, Pioneers Go East Collective’s Crossroads series at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York City. SPRING WRITING WORKSHOPS | A public Space
$400 for 4 sessions | Artist Farmhouse, 2nd floor
Visit apublicspace.org for more information
This spring at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, nurture new writing or explore your work-in-progress from a new perspective in an intimate workshop with local authors Mary-Beth Hughes and Peter Trachtenberg. Presented in partnership with the literary magazine and press A Public Space, the workshops will take place over four Saturday sessions in April.
How to Pass, Kick, Fall and Run — A Workshop with Mary-Beth Hughes
Merce Cunningham describes himself in 1965 as a practical man who will create a simple dance set to stories written and read aloud by his friend John Cage. What results—How to Pass, Kick, Fall and Run—is something of beauty. This workshop will be an opportunity to play and experiment with narrative movement. We’ll take up characters, themes, progressions and put them through some paces.
On Difficulty and Attention — A Workshop with Peter Trachtenberg
All good writing arises from concentrated attention. This workshop seeks to restore your capacity for attention through generative writing prompts, readings, and critical engagement with your own writing. We’ll be looking both inward, at the sources of your story, and outward, at the physical and social world that writing seeks to reflect and illuminate— and maybe even transform.
